IPL hair removal is safe, as it targets the hair follicles and leaves the skin generally untouched. The light is designed to affect only the hair follicles allowing the healthy surrounding skin to remain unaffected reducing downtimes and side effects.
Many people have IPL on their lunch breaks and return to work immediately following the procedure. Most patients will require 4-6 treatment sessions to fully remove unwanted hair. Convenient, and lasting, IPL hair removal will save patients time and money long-term, allowing them to enjoy smooth, hairless skin.
Dr. Guarino will require you to wear safety goggles to protect your eyes from the light. The handheld device will be used to target hair follicles. Patients typically experience little to no discomfort but may feel a mild pinching sensation as Dr. Guarino works.
After IPL hair removal you may experience:
- Darkening of the skin, similar to a mild suntan or sunburn
- Lightening of the skin
- Pinching or stinging sensation during IPL treatment
- Mild swelling, pinkness or redness of the skin
Side effects of IPL hair removal are temporary, lasting 2 – 3 days. In some cases, it may take several weeks for side effects to recover. Dr. Guarino will make personalized recommendations on how to properly care for your skin type after hair removal.
Hair Removal FAQs
What are the side effects of IPL for hair removal?
A benefit to IPL hair removal is that there is virtually no down time. Unlike laser hair removal, IPL attacks the hair follicles from the inside and leaves the outer skin completely unharmed, leaving no redness or visible damage.
There are some side effects which include:
- Feeling of a mild sunburn on treated areas. This usually fades within a day or two
- Skin pigment darkened by bright light, similar to a sun tan. This may happen in patches, but will eventually fade
- On darker skin, care must be taken to ensure the skin does not overheat and result in blistering or pale patches
Most of these side effects can be avoided by consulting with your doctor before IPL hair removal treatment.
What is the difference between IPL and Laser hair removal?
Although the two forms of hair removal are often used interchangeably, IPL is very different from laser hair removal.
Simply put, IPL is a light source, not a laser. During laser hair removal treatment, a laser delivers a single wavelength where IPL uses a broad spectrum of light. Both laser hair removal and IPL treatment work by heating and destroying the hair follicle for permanent hair reduction.*
Is IPL hair removal painful?
Most patients report minimal discomfort, similar to the snapping of a rubber band against the skin. Others describe the procedure with a tingling or stinging sensation. Depending on your pain threshold, pain will vary, but IPL hair removal is no more painful than tweezing and most patients prefer it to waxing.
How Should I prepare for IPL hair removal treatment?
Because IPL uses light treatment, you should take caution not to sunbathe or use tanning beds before your treatment. IPL hair removal works best on pale skin.
In contrast to laser hair removal, IPL hair removal requires the hair to be short before treatment. Minimizing the length of the hair allows the light energy to be applied directly to the hair roots and minimize burning on the surface of the skin. This is ideal for those wishing to get rid of embarrassing hair.
What does the follow-up and after care of IPL entail?
In general, four to six sessions of IPL hair removal treatments are required to achieve permanent results. We recommend to follow up every 2 weeks but these can be scheduled anywhere from every week to once a month.
After your treatment, you should avoid:
-
- Soap on treated area for 24 hours
- Unnecessary sun exposure for 48 hours
- If the treatment was on underarms, deodorants or antiperspirants for 2-3 days
If you wish, you may apply an unscented soothing lotion, ice pack or wet towel to cool the treated areas.
