What to Expect From Photo Rejuvenation

Many of us have blemishes and spots on our skin that we wish would just go away. Photo rejuvenation makes that an actual possibility. It also helps with the appearance of saggy, aging skin. So how does this process work and what can you expect from it? Dr. Joseph Guarino of DermaCosmedica, a med spa in Princeton, NJ, fills you in on what you need to know.princeton, nj med spa

What is Photo Rejuvenation?

At our office, Dr. Guarino offers the Profile BBL™ Broadband light for his photo rejuvenation treatments. This utilizes something called Intense Pulsed Light, or IPL, to give your skin a makeover. It does this by heating up the layers of your skin, encouraging new collagen production through the natural processes your body uses.

As we get older, our skin starts to sag and loosen. This is because our body gradually stops producing as much collagen as we age. IPL stimulates the body to encourage it to start producing more collagen again. This makes your skin tighter and more youthful and helps lessen any blemishes or spots on your skin that you’re having problems with.

What Can Photo Rejuvenation Treat?

Many of the problems and insecurities you have with your skin may be able to be treated with photo rejuvenation. Dr. Guarino may advise it for any of the following:

  • Acne or acne scarring
  • Other facial scars
  • Sunspots or brown spots
  • Rosacea
  • Fine lines and wrinkles
  • Small veins on the face

There are other skin problems that Dr. Guarino may recommend this treatment for that aren’t listed. This will be discussed during his first consultation with you!

The Photo Rejuvenation Process

As with all treatments, Dr. Guarino will first want to have a consultation with you. This is so he can get a good feel for exactly what results you’re looking for and can recommend the correct treatment protocol for each specific patient. He’ll also discuss past and present medical history to make sure he’s recommending treatments that you’re qualified to receive.

If he decides photo rejuvenation is the right procedure for you, he’ll give you a full explanation of everything to expect. This is a non-invasive procedure that’s done right in our office. You’ll experience little, if any, pain or discomfort. The IPL is simply passed over the area you want to be treated. It can take a few minutes to a half an hour, depending on the size of the area and the blemishes you’re looking to fix.

The most common side effect you’ll experience is mild redness for a few days after the procedure. This is because the light is heating the layers of the skin. While you’ll notice tighter skin and more even pigmentation, it’ll usually take from 2-4 treatments to give you the complete result you’re looking for.
