What Is Dermaplaning?

Dermaplaning removes the vellus hair and the top layer of the skin on your face. A trained specialist, like the expert esthetician offered at DermaCosmedica, does this using a surgical scalpel. Removing a buildup of dead skin evens out your complexion and leaves your face extremely smooth.

Benefits of Dermaplaning

In addition to leaving your skin soft and smooth, dermaplaning comes with a host of other benefits:

  • Reduces breakouts: An oily buildup of dead skin cells means more clogging of your pores. Dermaplaning removes this buildup, so your pores aren’t as clogged and your facial cleansers and acne products can penetrate the skin the way they’re supposed to.
  • Lessens the appearance of wrinkles: When skin cells die off, they become dull and darker, emphasizing the wrinkled area. If new skin is stuck underneath that layer, the wrinkle depression is continued. Dermaplaning removes those dead skin cells, getting rid of the darker skin and eliminating the depression forming in the new layer.
  • Minimizes fine lines and acne scarring: Similar to the reasoning above, dermaplaning can make fine lines and acne scars on your face less visible.

What to Expect During a Dermaplaning Session

Since dermaplaning does involve a blade, a gentle antiseptic solution is used on the face beforehand. Then, the esthetician will use the scalpel to remove dead skin and peach fuzz from your face. While a scalpel to the face may sound scary, the process doesn’t hurt. All you should feel is a slight pressure!

Afterwards, the esthetician will recommend a skincare regimen to keep the effects of your session lasting as long as possible. Your skin will be extra sensitive to the sun afterwards, so it’s important that you use sunscreen at the very least. While your skin may be slightly red after treatment, it’s important to let it breathe for a little. Don’t slap makeup on your face right away. Give your skin about a day to settle down, and then get ready for the smoothest foundation application of your life.

How Often Should You Get Dermaplaning Treatments?

This is one of the deepest exfoliating treatments, so patients go about every 3-4 weeks on average. However, it all depends on your skin type. Our experts will determine how often you should go, as people with more sensitive skin will want to go less often.

It’s also important to note that while dermaplaning is ideal for most people, it’s not for everyone. If you have extremely reactive skin or certain skin conditions, this might not be a good idea for you. Having super inflamed acne is also a reason to sit this one out. However, your doctor and esthetician will know what’s best for you.
